当你展示你手上的钻戒的时候，你可否知道那些连钻石影子都没见过的无辜村民断送了手臂？甚至性命？

记得美国已故明星玛丽莲•梦露有一首歌是这样唱的：“钻石是女孩子的最佳伙伴”；但钻石也有可能成为它出产国最恐怖的敌人，钻石挂在一位美女脖子之前要经过一连串的试炼，可惜这试炼却让它的出产国经历残酷的战争，许多未成年少年因此受到威胁利用，而军队为了庞大的利益，大量屠杀无辜的人民。

这是2003年1月10日美国公共电视台播出的非洲狮子山内战实录。那位双手被砍掉的男人，是狮子山内战眾多受害者之一。為何交战派系要砍掉他的双手？原因单纯到残酷，是要让他无法替另一方打仗。
為何狮子山会在一九九○年到二○○二年发生长达十二年的内战？原因也单纯到无法相信：不是意识型态、不是宗教信仰，而是丰富的钻石矿藏。

粗糙而布满厚茧的手掌上，几颗乍看平凡无奇的石头，却是富商名流追逐不歇的珍宝。世界上大多数钻石的开採与切割，都经由第三世界的劳工之手，他们的收入与钻石的定价难成比例；盛產钻石的狮子山共和国，更因而為此付出了无比沉重的代价。
当地民眾似乎没有从钻石开採中获得任何好处。只有少数人享受这种非正规经济活动的利益。利益主要掌控在一小撮中间商与出口商手中，但会把获利投资在当地建设的例子则少之又少。
根据官方统计，国家当局只收取钻石出口利润的百分之三。在这百废待兴的国家少数人坐拥万贯家财，但数百万人却面临三餐不继，实在是强大的对比。
钻石恒久远，但它真实的代价到底为何？

Blood diamonds are those sold in order to fund armed conflict and civil war. Warlords and rebel groups in countries including Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia and Sierra Leone have used billions of dollars of profits from the sale of diamonds to buy arms and fund devastating wars. Diamonds mined in rebel-held areas in Cote d'Ivoire, a West African country in a state of volatile conflict, are currently reaching the international diamond market.The UN recently reported that $23million in blood diamonds had been smuggled from rebel-held areas of the Ivory Coast to international diamond markets.

The RUF (Sierra Leone's Revolutionary United Front developed a method for recruiting children right from the start. Girls as young as 10 were raped into submission. Boys were forced to execute village elders and sometimes even their own parents, cutting themselves off from their past lives and ensuring their absorption into their new rebel "family." Once children were conscripted, their loyalty was maintained through drugs and violence. When conscripts tried to escape, they were punished with branding or amputation. Countless other children-even infants-had their limbs hacked.
